Derek Kyle Karpel passed away on April 20, 2026. He had been sick in the hospital for several weeks.
He was born on June 23, 1971 in Greenock, Scotland to Larry Karpel of Star Junction, Pennsylvania and Euphemia (Faye) Keith of Greenock Scotland.
Kyle grew up in Greenock, Scotland; Pennsylvania and Kingsland, Georgia.
He married Serena Rice on September 18, 1996. They had two daughters. MaryJane and Elizabeth aka Sinclair. Derek also had a daughter Emily with Cassandra Andrews in 1987.
He had been a dump truck driver, roofer, concierge at the Ritz-Carlton, a car salesmen at Bennett Automotive Group and a Finance Manager. He became disabled in 2005. He lived with chronic pain since 1987 when he first got hit by a car.
He stopped going to school and started working to support his daughter Emily.
Derek had a remarkable ability to start a conversation and bring a smile to anyone he met. He was known for his sense of humor and adventurous spirit, which led to many cherished memories. He celebrated life's victories and embraced the freedom to truly live.
He taught his daughters and son to love the life they have, to be grateful for those around them, and to keep moving forward, even when they fall.
He wanted them to enjoy the lives they have.
He is proceeded in death by his mother, Euphemia Karpel. His grand parents on his mother's side, Archibald Keith and Mary Young. His grandparents on his father's side Andrew and Betty Karpel.
Several loved ones overseas.
He is survived by his wife, Serena Rice-Karpel. His daughters Emily Riley, MaryJane Karpel, Elizabeth Karpel. His granddaughters Luna Karpel and Olivia Laurendean.
His father, Larry Karpel. His Aunt Andrea Shimko and family.
His sister, Dawn Karpel and her family.
The Rices, Karabecs and Bates families.
The Keiths, Keatings, Connachans and Blairs in Scotland and England.
He loved them all very much.
