Dr. Sylvester O. Anyanwu, 83 years of age, went home to his Lord and Savior on February 24, 2024 at his home. He was a resident of Augusta, GA where he lived for 38 years.
Sylvester was born on November 12, 1940 in Amaokwe Nnarambia Ahiara, in Ahiazu-Mbaise, Imo State, Nigeria to parents Pancras and Patrolina Anyanwu. He first studied at Lagos General Hospital School of Nursing- Ministry of Health. As he was a brilliant student, he received a scholarship to study Pre-Medicine at Montclair State University in New Jersey. His pursuit of education also allowed him to cross paths with a young, Ghanaian woman who too had been awarded a scholarship to study abroad. He married the love of his life, Aurelia in 1972.
He proved himself to be an exceptional scholar and as a result, gained admission to medical school in Europe where he studied in both Italy and Yugoslavia and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Rijeka.
Sylvester and his wife had two daughters and together the family eventually settled in Augusta, Georgia. Sylvester was an employee of the Veterans Affairs hospital system for many years. His love of medicine also afforded him the opportunity to take care of multitudes of people in his homeland of Nigeria.
Dr. Anyanwu was very proud of where he came from and shared his Igbo culture and knowledge within the community. He held dance and drum classes and often showcased at local schools. He was truly a musician at heart. His hobbies included fishing and gardening, and sports such as tennis and soccer. He also officiated matches for Richmond county schools. He loved learning and was a polyglot, fluent in over 5 languages. He was an original member of the Augusta Union of Nigerian Indigenes. Sylvester never met a stranger, told the best stories and made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He was a true character indeed.
Sylvester is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Aurelia; daughters Tracey and Vicky; grandson Mason Howard; brother Valentine; and adopted son, Elijah Osundu Anyanwu. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, and cherished family and friends.
