Lawrence Edward Bates, affectionately known as Ed or Eddie B, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2024, in Augusta, Georgia, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on September 26, 1960, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ed spent his early years in metro Detroit before building much of his adult life in Colorado. In his later years, he retired with his family in Graniteville, South Carolina. No matter where he lived, Ed brought with him an infectious joy, a warm smile, and an open heart, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Ed’s proudest legacy is his children, who were his greatest source of pride and happiness. He is survived by his two sons, Skyler (Lola) and Logan (Lillia), and his daughter, Celeste. He was a devoted and loving grandfather to AyaDiana, Anaxander, Paicen, and Vivien, who brought him immense joy and purpose.
Ed was the life of every party and a steadfast friend to all. Whether cheering on his beloved Michigan Wolverines, Detroit Lions, or Denver Broncos, or simply sharing a laugh at a gathering, Ed had a way of lighting up every room he entered. Material possessions never mattered to him; instead, he cherished people, moments, and making memories. His big heart and easygoing nature ensured that everyone around him felt seen, valued, and deeply loved.
Known for his generosity and selflessness—always willing to give the shirt off his back—Ed demonstrated one final act of kindness by donating his organs to save the lives of others. His compassion and love for humanity will continue to shine through those he helped, cementing his legacy as a man who lived to give.
Ed is also survived by his siblings, Gayla (Keith), Staci, and Gregory (Dawn), along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Connie and Larry Bates, and his ex-wife, Stacy, the mother of his sons and a dear friend.
Rather than mourning, Ed would want his loved ones to celebrate the incredible life he lived. Raise a toast, share a story, and remember him with laughter and warmth. As Ed showed us every day, family and friends are what truly matter most. His legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
